Thanks for 50 Great Years

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”  – Mark Twain

Halifax had never seen a triple threat like the late & truly great Wade Smith: a remarkable leader in the fields of athletics, academics and activism.  He was born 50 years ago on May 14, 1967.  I’m not sure Wade could have pegged the exact moment he realized his purpose in life, but he repeatedly told us what that purpose was...

Here's a Thought....

If you haven't surfed over to the "Basketball Diary" on this site (under the About section), please take a look.  It's longer form stories about UP ball & related events, but I think it will keep your interest.  Check it out.

Meantime, please keep an eye on our site for news about the "UPlifting" mentorship project. Things are happening; exciting news to follow...

Brutal Honesty from Playgrounder-turned-Pro

UP game #7 was outstanding, but not for the reason you might expect.  The game saw 23 kids in the Needham Ctr gym having, well, a ball.  But while the players were great and the game was super fun (and the snacks delicious), the highlight of the morn was Joey Haywood's powerful talk.

The Halifax Hurricanes' point guard got brutally honest as he told of his life's arc, includng how he'd fallen painfully short academically before finally digging into the books as a SMU university student and achieving in the classroom beyond even his own expectations.  Oh, and he was also a perennial all-star on the court for the Huskies.  Joey wrapped by telling the rapt crowd: "There's a purpose for you being here. For everyone being on this earth. There's a reason why your heart is beating... find that purpose, go after what you want, and never give up.  No matter how hard it may be some days, tomorrow will be better.  You can - and will - get there if you work your butt off."

In an age when everyone seems to expect things to come fast and easy, and attitude often swaggers ahead of aptitude, Joey's message was as powerful as 'King Handles' driving the lane.  And once you know how hard the man worked to make it to college, let alone carve out a career in the pros, rooting for Haywood just became layup easy.  Check out the team's schedule at: www.halifaxhurricanes.ca

UP Next... Needham Ctr site of Tmrw's Game

The registration is almost closed for tomorrow's UP game at Needham Ctr in north Halifax.  The game, which has been scheduled (as is usual for our events) on a PD day for HRSB schools, will see dozens of players (girls and boys) hit the hardwood for 3-on-3 ball and a short talk from Joey Haywood -- scheduled speak for 9:30am. Thanks again to Nick Williams at Needham for hosting this game. And keep an eye out for details of next month's game in Dartmouth...

Halifax Hurricanes' Joey Haywood to Visit UP

Great news! Joey Haywood, point guard for the Halifax Hurricanes pro team and former SMU all-star (First Team all-Canadian and the nation’s leading scorer) will be guest speaker at our next event on March 22nd.

This event is slated for 9-12 pm at Needham Community Ctr on Devonshire Ave.  UP is thrilled to welcome the NBL pro / street-baller “King Handles” to our hardwood.

Thanks to Nick Williams of Halifax City Parks & Rec for hosting this game.

February Update

The U. King’s College gym was a lively spot this morning as 30 kids from across Halifax and Dartmouth played pick-up games as part of the latest UP event.  Dev Norris put players thru their paces with the assistance of Josh Creighton.  Maria (“Dr. M&M”) Migas worked the registration desk and spun the tunes.  The morning wrapped up with a series of full-court runs in which Team Josh, Team Dev, & Team Dave did battle.  Great day for all. Thanks to Neil Hooper and Trish Miles of UKC for letting UP use Halifax’s best gym!  Next UP… Needham Ctr. in March!
